Essential Oils, Outdoor Summer Activities, and That Swim Suit Body! :/



As the weather gets warmer we will all be spending more time outdoors, which also means we will be exposed to more seasonal threats, bugs, and physical activity. I know for my family, summer time means we will be hiking, camping, swimming, playing sports together, cooking out, and relaxing at the lake. Here are a few suggestions for doTERRA products and essential oils that you can use throughout the summer.

Essential Oils for Summer Cooking

  • Basil                                                                              
  • Cilantro
  • Coriander

Avocado Salsa
  • 6 medium roma tomatoes (20 ounces), seeded and dices
  • 1 cup red onion, chopped
  • 1 large or 2 small jalapeños , seeded and chopped (1/4 cup. Leave seeds if you like).
  • 3 medium avocados, semi-firms, but ripe, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 3 ½ Tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 - 3 drops of Lime essential oil
  • 1 - 2 drops Cilantro essential oil
  • 1 clove garlic, finely minced
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon fresh ground pepper

1.      Place red onion in strainer and rinse under cool water to remove harsh bite. Drain well and place in a large mixing bowl. Add tomatoes, jalapeños, and avocados.
2.      In a smaller bowl, whisk together olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper, and essential oils until well mixed. Pour over avocado mixture in larger bowl and gently toss together.
3.      Serve with tortilla chips or over Mexican entrees.

After all the fun is said and done you may realize that you had TOO much fun and got a sun burn, bug bites, nausea from all the food, etc. Here are some ideas for after fun remedies (also see DigestZen above for tummy issues).

After Sun Skin Soothing Recipe
Add equal part peppermint and lavender essential oils (try 10 drops each at first) to the spray bottle and fill the rest of the way with water. Spray of burnt skin to help soothe the burning sensation. Lavender helps to promote skin healing and peppermint provides a cooling sensation to dull the burning pain.

Boo-Boos
Mix Lavender and Melaleuca essential oils with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil, baby oil, almond oil, etc. and apply to wound to soothe skin, promote healing, and disinfect.

Bug Bites
Apply Lavender to bug bites to help calm skin irritations.

**Remember to keep your family safe from the sun with sunscreen as well! Do you know what your sunscreen is made of though? Could it be doing more harm than good? Heal Your Gut With Essential Oils, Nutrition, and Supplements

First of all, if you have not read my previous article about Essential Oils and Digestion I suggested you go back and read that first.

Remember last week, we talk about how your digestive system is the first line of defense against chemicals and pathogens. When the lining of our gastrointestinal (GI) tract  is damaged, whether it be from chemical or poor diet, large, partially digested foods, chemicals, and pathogens can slip straight into the blood stream causing systemic inflammation that can lead to food allergies and autoimmune diseases. This is call Leaky Gut Syndrome. If you have not heard of this before, I suggest reading this article from Dr. Axe called 4 Step To Heal Leaky Gut And Autoimmune Disease. This week we are going to further talk about essential oils and supplements that support digestive health. 


Single Oils:


+Black Pepper: The constituents in this oil are known for their antioxidant properties, supporting circulation, and aiding in digestion.* For digestive health, take internally in a capsule or apply topically to abdomen.


Cardamon: Cardamom can be taken internally or applied topically to abdomen to ease indigestion, alleviate occasional stomach discomfort, and maintain overall GI health.*

"Back to Basics" - Top Ten Single Oils - Clove

Today is day 9 of my "Back to Basics" series.



Clove

Clove oil is PACKED full of antioxidants* and is ranked highest on the Oxygen Radical Absorbence Capacity (ORAC) scale*. The ORAC scale was developed by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) researchers at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusettes (BioSource Naturals, n.d.). ORAC measures the time and degree of free radical inhibition. While free radicals are a natural by-product of chemical reactions in our body, if we have too many free-radicals bouncing around we can start to experience cell damage.

Clove oil (Eugenia caryophyllata) is extracted from clove bud through steam distillation. The main chemical component of clove oil is Eugenol, also found in cinnamon and nutmeg, which can be used as a natural antiseptic and anesthetic.* The Eugenol and flavonoids in clove give it a spicy, warm, and woodsy aroma and creates a warming and stimulating effect when applied topically.

Besides being a powerful antioxidant,* clove also supports cardiovascular health when taken internally,* can be used as a flavoring in any dish, and helps to clean gums and teeth.

My favorite way to use clove is in a diffuser with cinnamon and wild orange. I get the benefits of the antioxidants* as well as a citrus aroma to help balance emotions.*

Clove is considered a HOT oil and should ALWAYS be diluted when usually topically. Practice extreme caution when using on children. If redness of the skin occurs, apply coconut or almond oil to dilute it more.

"Back to Basics" - Top Ten Single Oils - Wild Orange

This is day 7 of my "Back to Basics" series.



Wild Orange

This is one of my favorite single oils. The main chemical component in orange is Limonene. It is also very high in monoterpenes, which gives this oil an energizing aroma. doTERRA's oranges are sourced from the Dominican Republic and the oil is extracted from the rinds (peel) through the cold press technique. The scientific name for wild orange is Citrus sinensis.

Wild orange is a power cleaning and purifying oil that provides protection from seasonal and environment threats and is very high in antioxidants.* Like most citrus oils, orange is also incredibly effective at uplifting one's mood.* This oil is commonly used in cleaning recipes, as a flavor enhancer in water and foods, in a diffuser to uplift moods and purify air, and when combined with other oils, it can provide a mid-day mental pick me up.

I use this oil in my house every day. Here is a list of ways we use it:

1. Diffuse with lavender at night to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety.*
2. Add to a roller bottle with lavender and fractioned coconut oil (FCO) and apply to bottoms of feet, wrists, and back of neck for relaxation and reduced anxiety* before bed or as needed throughout the day.
3. Combine with peppermint oil either in a diffuser or in your hands (rub palms together and inhale aroma and rub on the back of your neck) for a mid-day mental pick me up.
4. In my homemade lip balm recipe from doTERRA (link below).

Health concerns:*

Anxiety: Healthy male subjects displayed reduced anxiety after five minutes of inhalation of orange essential oil compared to the inhalation of melaleuca essential oil or distilled water when submitted to an anxiety inducing situations (Goes et al., 2012).

"Back to Basics" - Top Ten Single Oils - Oregano

Today is day six of my "Back to Basics" series.



Oregano

Oregano really packs the 1-2-3-4 punch!  Its antibacterial, antiviral, antiparasitic, and antifungal properties make it an extremely powerful cleaning agent and one of the best oils for immune system support.* Oregano oil is extracted from the leaf of the plant through steam distillation. The scientific name for the plant is Origanum vulgare and it is indigenous to Turkey. The main chemical components of oregano oil are carvacrol, thymol, para-cymene, gamma-terpinene.

Along with being a powerful cleaning agent and an immune system supporter, oregano oil also supports healthy digestive and respiratory function* and it is an amazing source of antioxidants*. Place one drop in an empty veggie capsule and take once a day for healthy immune and respiratory function.* The phenols in oregano oil are what make it such a powerful cleaning agent, therefore, you can add 10 drops to a 16 ounce glass bottle with water to create a effective surface cleaner.

My absolute favorite way to use this oil is with my cooking. I add a drop to spaghetti sauce, chili, and stews. A little goes a long way when you use it for cooking. The other way I like to use oregano oil is to fight any kind of virus, bacteria, or fungus.* I basically use oregano oil any time anyone in my house gets sick. Then they smell like an Italian kitchen for the rest of the day! :)

Oregano oil can be use aromatically, topically, and internally. It is considered a "hot" oil and therefore you should ALWAYS dilute this oil, even more so for use on children.

Antibacterial Properties: Oregano oil was found to kill antibiotic-resistant strains of Staph, E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Helicobactor pylori, and Mycobacterium terrae. (Preuss et al., 2005).

Antioxidant Properties: The antioxidant acitivity of oregano essential oil added to extra virigin olive oil at 0.05% was found to retard the lipid oxidantation process in olive oil and prolong the olive oil's shelf life. (Asensio et al., 2011).
